Being prepared is the first step in reducing costly home repairs and emergency situations during inclement weather . Here are some tips to help keep you warm, safe and reduce the chance of damage to your residence and/or property:

Fried turkeys, bacon grease, giblet gravy, buttered rolls…holiday celebrations are a time for festive get togethers – not for FOG (Fats, Oil & Grease) to clog pipes which can cause major and costly repairs to homes and your community’s sewer system.
Sanitary sewer blockages typically increase during the holidays. When FOG, even food scraps, go down the kitchen sink or garbage disposal, they can cause blockages in your pipes that can lead to overflows. The FOG material will solidify and basically stick to the sewer pipe; it won’t move only “grow” if you keep pouring these illicit items down the drain (gross!). Over time that FOG will restrict the flow in the pipe and cause major sewer backups in your home or your community’s sewer system. Nobody wants that – it is costly, nasty, and horrible for the environment.
And those “flushable” wipes are a major issue, too. They may be marked “flushable” but they don’t break down like toilet paper. You’re basically flushing a handkerchief down the toilet. This cloth-like material is horrible for your sanitary sewer system. Your household pipes and treatment plant are not designed to handle these wipes. They are causing havoc to our wastewater systems. If you think overflow from your kitchen sink is bad, how about an overflow from your clogged toilet? If you must use these wipes, throw them in the trash – do not flush them!
